Insert-Based Barrel Systems

  • What is a control bore?

    A control bore is the non-ported length of the barrel responsible for accelerating the paintball.

    Controlling this acceleration is done by using different control bore sizes and lengths (typically 5″ and 8″ or longer).

    Because paintballs come in a range of sizes, control bore sizes range from .675″ to .695″.

  • What are traditional inserts?

    Traditional inserts are interchangeable control bores that allow players to easily change bore sizes.

    Sizing the bore to your paintball size allows you to choose the control bore fit type you prefer.

    Typically, the closer the bore size is to your paintball size, the greater the efficiency.

  • What are Overcore inserts?

    Overcore inserts are 2-piece inserts with a control bore and self-adjusting tip that supports paintballs ranging from .675″ to .695″. Overcore control bores have the same benefits as traditional inserts. The self-adjusting Overcore tip has the following additional benefits:

     

    • More consistent than traditional inserts. EASY.
    • Dynamically adjusts to paint size variations. EASY.
    • Softer on brittle paint than traditional inserts. EASY.
    • Maximize efficiency with multiple control bores. EASY.

Control Bore Fit Types

Paintballs vary slightly in size from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from the same bag. Environmental conditions, including heat and humidity, can also cause paintballs to change size.

Knowing the current size of your paintballs allows you to choose the appropriate control bore size to use your preferred fit type.

  • Over-Bore

    This fit type means the control bore size is up to .008″ larger than your paint size.

    If your paintball size is .685″, the control bore size is up to .693″.

  • Slight Over-Bore

    This fit type means the control bore size is up to .004″ larger than your paint size.

    If your paintball size is .685″, the control bore size is up to .689″.

  • Bore Match

    This fit type means the control bore size matches your paint size.

    If your paintball size is .685″, the control bore size is .685″.

  • Slight Under-Bore

    This fit type means the control bore size is up to .004″ smaller than your paint size.

    If your paintball size is .685″, the control bore size is down to .681″.

  • Under-Bore

    This fit type means the control bore size is up to .008″ smaller than your paint size.

    If your paintball size is .685″, the control bore size is down to .677″.

  • Which fit type is best or most accurate?

    There is no single fit type that is best for all scenarios. Different players may value certain features more than others. Environmental conditions also factor in when choosing fit types.

    While over-boring may have higher brittle paint and paint size range ratings, it also has a lower efficiency rating. Some players may be unwilling to make this trade-off.

    While under-boring may have higher efficiency and paint size range ratings, it also has a low brittle paint rating. Some players may be unwilling to have higher efficiency if it means dealing with more barrel breaks.

    Accuracy is the result of a combination of features that can affect each other.

Chart Ratings

  • Consistency

    Consistency indicates how similar the paintball trajectory path is from shot to shot.

    A high rating generally indicates higher accuracy. Consistency is the largest contributor to accuracy.

  • Efficiency

    Efficiency indicates how much of the pressurized air is used to accelerate the paintball through the control bore.

    A high rating generally means the control bore is sized close to the paintball size to prevent excess air from escaping around the sides of the paintball.

  • Brittle Paint Handling

    Brittle Paint Handling indicates how gentle on paint the fit type is.

    A high rating means barrel breaks are less likely.

  • Paint Size Range

    Paint Size Range indicates the intended range of paint sizes.

    A high rating means the range of paint sizes is widest.

    For example, bore matching is intended for your paint size only while over-boring is intended for up to .008″ larger than your paint size.
